Jingning, Huiming, Biaoxi, and Shawan—regions of Jiangnan are steeped in the memory and heart of Liang Quan, often revealing themselves within his art. Straight lines, circular discs, latticed grids, and bursts of starlight expand from the interlaced, flattened symbols, returning once more to the mountain paths and riverside lanterns of decades past. Yet time, at the far end, suddenly slips out of focus. Vivid experiences and elusive impressions entwine and intersect, lingering at the delicate midpoint between abundance and restraint, where ink traces both deep and faint quietly evoke the spirit of Zen.
Liang Quan was born in Shanghai to a family whose ancestors hailed from Zhongshan, Guangdong. In 1968, at the age of twenty, Liang graduated from the Affiliated High School of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts and was assigned to work at a local cultural center in Yunhe County, Lijiang. At thirty-two, he left to study abroad in the United States, later returning to China to teach in the Printmaking Department at the China Academy of Art for nearly two decades. In 1995, Liang "returned" to Guangdong, settling in Shenzhen, where he concluded his professional journey at the Shenzhen Fine Art Institute. Liang's paintings, much like the paths he has traveled, traverse mountains and rivers, at once clear and boundless, cultivating a quiet corner of contentment and wisdom through a journey marked by gentleness and humility.
Recalling Suzhou, Liang Quan has visited three times in total, with his first journey to Gusu taking place in 1965. Journeying from Hangzhou to Suzhou, he traveled along the Grand Canal, spending one night on the boat; by dawn, he had already arrived in Gusu. "It was lively and noisy on the boat, making sleep nearly impossible, yet the scene truly echoed the ancient verses: 'Bells break the ship-borne roamer's dream and midnight still,' and 'Under a small bridge near a cottage a stream flows.'" As Liang Quan speaks of his memories of Wu, his words are always tinged with an enduring fondness for the scenery of Jiangnan. The second visit came on a trip from Nanjing to Suzhou. "Zijin Temple was the most unexpected delight on that journey around Taihu Lake," he remembers. "Within the temple are remarkable colored clay sculptures of Arhats, two and a half halls remain in China today." His most recent, third visit to Suzhou was just a few years ago, Liang Quan recalls: "That time I went especially to visit the Suzhou Museum designed by Ieoh Ming Pei. The artists of Suzhou possess that distinct sensibility—graceful, refined, and highly capable."
Between Suzhou and Hangzhou, Hangzhou, after absorbing the influences of the Southern Song, has inherited more of a northern temperament, while Suzhou remains, in contrast, "the authentic keeper of its pleasant-sounding Wu dialect and Jiangnan's river towns." On the occasion of the opening of H+ Art Museum, Liang Quan's solo exhibition, "Illuminated," brings a spirit of clarity and tranquility to the museum's third and fourth floors. The exhibition presents 43 pieces and groups from the "Green" and "New Spring" series, along with an installation, "Jiangnan," specially commissioned by H+ Art Museum. Together, these works gaze toward the depths of homeland, memory, and civilization from within a layered harmony and quiet order. As the saying goes, "Each place nurtures its own inhabitants;" perhaps the answer for a traveler is never found in endless speculation about the future, but already shimmer in every scene, every feeling, and in the wise words of one time, one meeting.
